Denis Pétau, in Latin Dionysius Petavius, was a Jesuit theologian and philologist, born in Orleans on August 21, 1583, who died on December 11, 1652 in Paris. If Petau's fame rests mainly on his unfinished treatise, De theologicis dogmatibus, which was the first systematic attempt to expose the historical development of Christian doctrine, by interpreting the Scriptures from the councils and the Fathers, he was especially recognized during his lifetime for his researches on comparative chronology (Annales de Pétau or Petavian annals)
