Ancient Egyptian scarab, New Kingdom, 1479-1458 BC. Glazed steatite. Provenance: Private collection of Albert Dubus (1846 - 1917 France). Albert Dubus was a founding member of the French Prehistoric Society and vice-president of the Norman Society for Prehistoric Studies. Intact. Measurements: 1.6 cm (length). The scarab was an amulet of life and power in the form of a dung beetle, an animal associated with Jepri, the self-created, god of the rising sun. It is the most common type of Ancient Egyptian amulet, and is small in size and, in most cases, has a hole that allows it to be set into a necklace. Among the different materials in which scarabs have been made, basalt, granite, amethyst, lapis lazuli, carnelian, gold and, as on this occasion, steatite stand out.
