It is in the 17th century that the tea trade begins. Transported in wooden crates, the tea was then packaged mostly in tin. Europeans made a wide range of boxes of various shapes and sizes and in different materials such as ivory, silver metal, lacquer or painted sheet metal.
In the 18th century, these boxes were decorated with Chinese scenes, depicting pagodas, birds and lake landscapes.
