Beautifully illustrated with intaglio vignettes and 20 aquatint engravings of maps, views, elevations, planimetrics, architectural details, etc. Enc. in half leather and tips, spine with gilt, rubbed. Intermittent signs of foxing. Ex-libris of previous owner. FIRST EDITION of this magnificent work in which its author methodically draws and describes the monuments of the main cities of ancient Greece such as Sicily, Syracuse or Paestum. Wilkins traveled through Greece and Asia Minor between 1801 and 1804, together with the Italian landscape painter Agostino Aglio. His love of travel and classical archaeology contributed to his training in neoclassicism, making him one of the leading figures in British architecture.
