Processional cross; Italy, 14th century.
Wooden core. Copper and embossed and gilded metal.
It has restorations on the base.
Measurements: 65 x 33 x 9 cm.
Processional cross with a wooden core and an assembly made from gilded copper plates and metal. The piece shows the body of the dead Christ, with his head bent towards his chest, his strength exhausted. As for the technical workmanship of the piece, mention should be made of the ornamental work of the cross, which ends in poly-lobed blades, which are profusely ornamented both on the front and back, where the figure of the four evangelists can be seen, located at each end of the cross, while on the front these spaces are reserved for two angels, located at the top and bottom, and the presence of Mary and Saint John, so that the scene would represent Calvary in a certain way.
This type of piece was used for important liturgical events, such as processions, and was often changed when there were economic means to do so and in line with new fashions. Precious metals and materials such as gold, silver, gilded silver, enamel, precious stones, etc. were preferred for their production. However, if the parish or ecclesiastical authority could not afford to pay for them, they were made in other more humble but richer-looking materials such as gilded copper. In this second case, too, the fashions and techniques of silverware were followed, and striking similarities can be found in works made of different materials.
