CHARLES NAPIER KENNEDY (1852 - 1898) The Marmaid, the mermaid Canvas (restorations, small lack). Signed lower right. H_159 cm L_123 cm Inscribed on the back with the title, the artist's name and his address in New York. Provenance: - Probably acquired by the Temple Newsam House Museum in Leeds in 1891 (from a signed letter from Christopher Gilbert of the Temple Newsam House Museum in Leeds, dated August 16, 1967; inscription on the original frame "Pourchased in 1891"); - probably sold to Alister Mattheus around 1930; - sold probably by his heirs at auction in 1967 in Toombridge Wells, Kent. This is probably the painting "The Mermaid" cited in the Benezit (under "Kennedy Charles Napier") as being in Leeds.
