SAMUEL PROUT (British, 1783–1852), “THE MILL”, watercolour, depicting house with watermill overlooking stream; similar in composition to a print in Prout's 'A Series of Easy Lessons in Landscape Drawing'. In heavy ornate gesso frame. Hand written label verso reading “Purchased from the artist by Sir John Crampton. Given on his death by Mrs/Miss Selina Crampton to my wife. December 1886. H Jephson, The Boltons, London SW.” Dimensions: 57cm x 43cm approx. frame_x000D_ Sir John Crampton was an Irish born British Diplomat, Minister to the United States from 1852 to 1856 and Minister to Russia from 1858 to 1860. He was born to Sir Philip Crampton, 1st Baronet – a Dublin doctor and scientist and one of the founders of the Pitt Street Institution in Dublin and his wife Selina. Sir John Crampton and his sister Selina Crampton were both talented artist’s in their own right.
