ANNA EVA BERGMAN (1909 - 1987) N°7-1974 Flamme bleue, 1974 Acrylic, modeling paste and metal sheet, signed and dated lower right, countersigned, titled and dated on reverse 60.5 x 73 cm 23 5/8 x 28 47/64 in. Anna Eva Bergman was born in Stockholm to a Norwegian mother and a Swedish father. She graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Oslo in 1927, then from the School of Applied Arts in Vienna the following year. A virtuoso of line, she asserts her talent through lines and volutes, both simple and effective, which soberly translate a movement or an attitude. In 1929, she met and married Hans Hartung, whose influence of the Neue Sachlichkeit would mark her personal production. It was not until the 1940s that the artist moved away from figurative painting and placed line and rhythm at the center of her work, which became fundamental in her pictorial research. Little by little, Anna Eva Bergman imagines and builds a singular universe with a dreamlike repertoire, declining on the canvas her stones, moon, star, mountains or mirrors. The work presented here is part of the artist's lyrical register, with chimerical colors, enriched with gold, which remind us of the two great themes she tackles: the waves and the rain.
