In 1861/62 Albert Anker undertook an extended trip to Italy, which took him to Milan, Venice and Florence, among other places. In Venice, he visited the Basilica Santi Giovanni e Paolo, where he recorded Titian's 1528 altarpiece as a pencil drawing. This served as a model for the present copy of the painting, while Titian's original was destroyed by fire in 1867.
