DÜNZ, JOHANNES Autumn still life with fruits and bouquet of flowers. Oil on canvas, inscribed on old plaque "Dünz", 61,5x75,5 cm Provenance: Private property, Switzerland. The present painting is one of the few known still lifes by Johannes Dünz. It is presumed that the artist created works of this genre purely as a hobby alongside his main activity as a portraitist, and therefore mostly neither signed nor dated them. Like the sequence of seasons in the Kunstmuseum Bern, our composition may have originally been part of such a four-part sequence, representing autumn. Almost identical in format and compositionally similar, it shows an arrangement of seasonal fruits, including various apples, a melon, and blue and white grapes on a wooden table leaf. In our painting, a comparatively representative silver footed bowl takes the place of the woven basket with handles placed in the center axis of the painting in the Museum of Fine Arts Bern, and instead of the simple vine tendril on the left, our still life is adorned with a lush bouquet of roses and carnations. http://www.dobiaschofsky.com/d106--10016.html
