ROBERT DE BOURGOGNE Latin charter on parchment written during the reign of Robert of Burgundy, between 1085 and 1110, without place or date. One leaf on parchment, 320 x 325 mm; 13 long lines; carbon ink; caroline script; small stains, right edge slightly trimmed (without loss of text), two tears (without missing) at top. Period and later annotations on spine. Large braided cord (30 cm) having been used to attach the seal (now missing). Extremely rare and beautiful charter of Robert of Burgundy (Châtillon-sur-Seine 1059 / 1110), bishop of Langres from 1085 to 1110, with its large braid, relating to the servitude of a woman. TEXT Accused of some crime by the Constable of Burgundy, Renaud de Grancey (born around 1060), Petronilla, wife of Arnauld the Old, finds in the bishop Robert of Burgundy, a defender. The two men reached an agreement (placatus) according to which Pétronille was "set free" without condition or condemnation by Renaud and given to the chapter of the cathedral church of Saint-Mammès. She remained in servile condition at the end of this act, which was in a way an act of emancipation (liberam concedens). Translation of the act in Latin: "I ROBERT by the favor of divine grace bishop of the Holy Church of Langres, for the purpose of information, make known to you all, faithful of the said church, both present and future, that Renaud de Grancey, with the consent and approval of certain faithful, his own and ours, has yielded in a spirit of conciliation to the community of Saint-Mammès and to the mense of the said monks, Petronilla, wife of Arnauld the Old, whom he was unjustly holding. This woman, with all her offspring already born and those to come, he has ceded her free of any constraining punishment, great or small, just or unjust, and has given her to the religious of the above-mentioned church, confirming in my hands under the faith he had sworn to me, that he would faithfully respect this agreement. This is why, considering that it was opportune to keep the memory of it and because the human memory is wavering and outdated, we had it put in writing. And for more guarantee we have confirmed it with our own hand and given it to our dignitaries to confirm." With the seals of bishop Robert; Amalric dean; Gocelin archdeacon; Hugo archdeacon; Garnier archdeacon; Thierry chaplain; Guillaume; Loderic le Gros seal of Constant deacon; Raoul de Lanfroicourt subdeacon ; of Raoul provost Evrard's seal; of Albéric Le Brun; of Constantin du For; of Odolric the elder; of Gaudry Leriche; of Richard treasurer; of Vubert du cloître; of Constantin de Campel; of Constant Le Fort (?) ; Odolric Le Bègue.
