SUMMER ANTIPHONARY-HYMNARY West Germany - Cologne, Deutz Abbey (?), 14th century. In Latin, illuminated manuscript on parchment 381 ff. (out of 388 ?), that is : 38 quires of 10 ff. each (almost all of them with claims on the back of the tenth leaf, signatures after the third quire) and a last quire of 8 ff. 7 leaves are missing, in the following quires : 1 (before f. 2), 15 (before f. 146), 26 (before f. 253), 28 (before f. 269), 30 (before f. 296), 34 (before f. 330), and 35 (before f. 339); on parchment, 455 x 300 mm (310 x 200 mm); 10 long lines with staves; metallo-gallic ink; black ink rules; modern foliation in pencil, middle of upper recto margin; textualis formata, four-line stave (one rubr.) with fine neumatic Germanic square notation. Several hands (at least two); rubrics, red, blue and black initials cadelated sometimes with grotesque figure, about 38 puzzle initials on two lines (with staves) richly filigree with antennae of i-bands, 10 historiated initials with antennae of i-bands. Full 19th century brown morocco on wooden boards, spine with 6 nerves, cold filets, copper cabochons on the boards (5 missing), clasps (1 of 2) (19th century binding in imitation of the period, probably a commission from the Duke of Parma, Charles-Louis de Bourbon). (465 x 310 mm) Superb summer antiphonary-hymnal produced in Cologne probably from the scriptorium of Deutz Abbey, illustrated with ten superb historiated initials. Augusti, libro Job, medie sept., Kal Oct.), Dominicae. - 78r-145: Sanctoral: rubr: "Quando festum sancti Ambrosii post celebratorum dicitur as utrumque super magnificat antiphon", of which "in natale unius martiris", "in natale sancti marci evangeliste", 80v [i.e. 81v]; rubr. "Ruberti abbatis": i.e. Rupert de Deutz (see Analecta Bollandiana, tomus LV, 1937, p. 247) (mention also on f. 370r [377r]); 145r152r: "In dedicatione ecclesiae" (f.146-152 [i.e. 148-154]: leaves with some marginal annotations of the period: musical notations (alleluias)); f.272 In festo sancte Marie Magdalene"; f.179v180v: Canticum preceding the Ascension of the Virgin; 215v [i.e. 217]: rubr. (Cantus ID 202819: surely does not refer to Elisabeth of Hungary but to Elisabeth of Schönau whose cult was observed in Cologne f.272-381: Hymnal - f.272f.272: rubr. "De resurrectione cantica" with subsequent hymns including 300v [i.e. 305]: rubr. "De sancto Bernardo abbate ymnus" and "Ruberti abbatis" on f. 370r; (342v-343v [i.e. 346-347]: change of contemporary hand: inc. "Innumerabilis virginum chorus..." (Cantus ID 601197) - 381v: des. "Venite exultemus domino" (Cantus ID 909030). ICONOGRAPHY - f.1v : The holy women at the tomb, initial painted on a gold background with antennae with two parrots and a stork (style close to the XIIIth c.). - 118v [i.e. 119] : St. John the Baptist before a woman at prayer - 138v [i.e. 139] : St. Benedict - 146r [i.e. 148] : Woman placing her crown on an altar accompanied by a king doing the same (rubr. " In dedicatione ecclesie "). The preceding leaf is missing. - 180v [i.e. 182]: Assumption of the Virgin - 190v [i.e. 192]: St. Bernard - 218r [i.e. 220]: St. Ursula and her companions on two boats in front of the walls of Cologne - 259r [i.e. 262]: Crucifixion of St. Andrew (normal cross, not diagonal, see rubr. On f. 258r "sancti Andree apostoli ad vesperas") - 325r [i.e. 330]: The beheading of St. John the Baptist - f. 377 [i.e. 382]: St. Cecilia The style of the historiated miniatures corresponds to the production of West Germany (Rhineland). An antiphonary now preserved in Dôle, BM, Ms. 44, produced in southwestern Germany (Alsace?) and dated after 1357 (see the IRHT's Initial database) has medallions similar to those adorning our historiated initials; the richness of the watermarks framing the pages is also reminiscent of the lavish means of the historiated initials, and the richness of the watermarks framing the pages is also reminiscent of the jigsaw initials introducing each feast day in our manuscript. PROVENANCE The attention paid to St. Ursula and Elizabeth in the manuscript probably refers to the city of Cologne where their cults were particularly observed. There are also two mentions of "Ruberti abbatis", probably Rupert of Deutz (c. 1070 in Liège - 1129 in Deutz), a theologian and monk who directed the abbey of Deutz at the end of his life.
