BOOK OF HOURS FOR THE USE OF ROME France (Rouen?), ca. 1480-1500 In Latin, illuminated manuscript on parchment 145 ff (16, 26, 38, 48, 58-1, 6-88, 98-2, 104, 118, 128, 134, 144, 15-188, 1912-1, 204, +1). The first leaf of the Lauds for the Virgin with the corresponding miniature and two other leaves in a prayer for Advent (ff.64-65) are missing. One leaf remains at the end of the volume for the hours of the cross, which were presumably part of the book at the time; 226 x 154 mm. (153 x 103 mm.); on parchment; 21 long lines in metallic-gallic ink; red ink rules; later foliation (16th-17th); hybrida libraria; calendar illustrated with 24 sidebands decorated with a historiated square vignette (with the labors of the fields on the recto and the signs of the zodiac on the verso) framed by geometrical motifs decorated with flowers and acanthus leaves; 12 miniatures on a half-page, 32 vignettes of saints. Secondary decorations: lateral bands with zoomorphic motifs, flowers and acanthus leaves organized in geometrical patterns; painted lettering on two or three lines; gilt lettering with alternating red, brown and blue backgrounds; endpapers; red and blue rubrics; rare wetness (rag/wet hand) at the beginning of the volume in the calendar and the passion according to St. John (ff.7, 8, 12, 19). Red silk velvet cover (19th century), long spine, two silver-plated brass clasps, one missing, parchment backing; modern conservation case, half-percaline with corners. Superb late fifteenth century book of hours produced in a Rouen workshop. ") - 101r-109r: Psalterium Hieronimi : inc. "Verba mea auribus ... " - 109r-133v: Various prayers in Latin: the seven parolles that Jesuscrist says in the cross, to recommend himself to god and to the angels, on the five joys of Mary, confession to God, to our lady, ..., 128r: Prayer for fact of weapon to be said or to be carried on oneself, inc. : "Ave vulnus lateris...", (f.134 empty), etc. - 135r-146r: Suffrages - 146r-147v: Oraisons in French: 10 commandments, 12 articles of faith and works of charity, etc. - ff. 148: Hours of the Cross (one leaf only): end of tierce and beginning of Sexte. ICONOGRAPHY The calendar is adorned with 24 lateral bands decorated with a historiated square vignette with the work of the fields on the recto and the signs of the zodiac on the verso, all framed with flowers and acanthus leaves organized in various geometric motifs, which are found a lot in the Rouen production. PROVENANCE - Arms painted in the lower margin of f. 21: Probably the sponsor of the manuscript "Quarterly of gules to the tower of silver and silver to the vair of azure" and "Mi-parti of gules to the tower of silver in chief, silver to the vair of azure and or to the three chevrons of sable to the lambel of gules. - Later (16th) painted female arms on reverse of f. 20: "Banded chequy Or and Gules and Argent" and "Parti au bandé chequy Or and Gules and Argent and demi parti Or au tiercefeuilles Gules et fess Gules en charge et en pointe Gules à trois fusées d'or accolées"; painted motto scratched on remains of azure background and enc
