The unknown painter takes up in this painting a story dear to Roman painting from the 17th century onward, that of Cimone and Pero. The elderly man is sentenced to death by starvation and his young daughter nurses him in prison so that he can survive; a guard discovers her and is impressed by the young woman's generosity. Officials grant Pero's elderly father a pardon to celebrate her Roman honor. The painter here is well aware of the most vivid lessons provided by important painters over the centuries: the example of Luca Giordano and Rubens is well reflected in Cimone's pose. Oil on canvas, dimensions ext. 27.5x32, int. 19x25.5 cm.
