The unknown Central European painter of the late 16th century here achieves a high quality interpretation of the biblical episode. The strongly verticalized composition is dominated by the figure of the angel stopping the impetuous hand of Abraham, who is about to strike down his son Isaac, depicted kneeling and almost with his back to the observer. Oil on panel, dimensions ext. 115x85, int. 106x76 cm.
