Study of a monk's head
Paper mounted on panel
42 x 28 cm
This beautiful study, certainly executed from life, was to serve as a repertoire of motifs in the workshop.
We find for example a monk's head very close to it in The profession of faith of Saint Norber and the brothers of his order in the night
brothers of his order on Christmas night in the year 1120 (Averbode, Norbertine Abbey), rep.in: Hans VLIEGHE,
Gaspar de CRAYER, sa vie et ses oeuvres, Arcade Brussels, 1972, pl.148; often associated with another head,
it can be found (in reverse) in The Holy Virgin and Child Jesus venerated by various saints (
Meppen Gymnasialkirche) op.cit. Pl.172; it can also be compared to the Saint Anthony of Padua
(Madrid, PRADO Museum), op.cit. Pl 179, as well as the Saint Benoit (Termonde, Benedictine abbey of
Saints Peter and Paul (op.cit. Pl 45.
