FORBES, James Two views near Vienna. 1796 Drawings, watercolour, pencil, 25,5 x 31,5 cm and 24 x 30 cm, laid paper (mounted on Whatman paper), signed, dated and titled in brown ink "J. Forbes 1796", 1 numbered 125 at top. Mounted on paper with framing lines in black ink and watercolour, under passe-partout. Forbes (1749-1819), a British artist and writer, known for his writings on India, where he traveled in 1765 for the British East India Company and was resident until 1784. After returning to England he married and toured continental Europe extensively, including a grand tour of Germany, Switzerland, and Italy in 1796 and 1797. This resulted in a series of wonderful watercolours and grisaille drawings, such as these wonderful views of Vienna.
