Joseph in the well. 17th c Drawing, black chalk, brown ink, brown wash, 24,4 x 20,6 cm, laid paper, unsigned (few holes, cut irregularly at top right, strengthened at upper edge). Framed (not studied outside frame). The story of Joseph and his brothers as described in Genesis 37. At left a few brothers with Joseph's coat. At right a few brothers pulling Joseph out of the well to sell him to the Ishmaelites. The underdrawing in black chalk reveals the artist made several small changes to the positions of the figures.
