MARGARET STARK (Indiana, 1915-New York, 1988). Untitled, 1974. Mixed media and collage on canvas. Signed and dated in the lower right corner. Size: 57 x 72 cm; 66 x 81 cm (frame). Stark's language, close to the abstract expressionism of Jackson Pollock and Cliffort Still, is characterised by the use of a wide range of colours and kaleidoscopic forms. The granddaughter of the Hoosier Group painter Otto Stark, Margaret Stark studied art at Oberlin College. In 1935 she moved to New York, where she worked with Yasuo Kuniyoshi and Hans Hoffman, the latter a teacher of Jackson Pollock and Cliffort Still. He spent several years in France, where he studied stained-glass windows in churches, an aspect that was to have a considerable influence on his work. From the 1950s onwards he established his summer residence in Pollença. For many years she combined her summer social life in Pollença with her working life as a teacher in the education department of the MoMA in New York.
