Saint John in meditation
Oil on oak panel
28,5 x 21,5 cm
Trace of collection stamp in wax
Black and gold frame from the 19th century
This well-preserved panel, with sensitive impastos, is close to the art of Willem de Poorter. A member of the Saint Luke's guild in Haarlem, this artist, in his touch and chiaroscuro, sometimes evokes Rembrandt in his early period. But he does not seem to have been a student of the Amsterdam master, as has been said. Here the painter shows the evangelist absorbed in his mystical visions, with the scriptures on his lap. By an idea as rare as it is ingenious, the eagle that distinguishes him is not at his side, but drawn on a sheet on the wall.
