Christian Rohlfs - View of Ehringsdorf near Weimar. Oil on canvas, mounted on wood. (19)00. Approx. 46 x 56 cm. Monogrammed and dated "00" lower right. - Rohlfs is considered one of the most important representatives of German open-air painting around 1900 - Typical work from this, for Rohlfs so important impressionist phase - Characteristic landscape from the surroundings of Weimar, where he studied and lived until 1901 "With the works created around 1900 Rohlfs was considered one of the leading representatives of German open-air painting. True, he was closer to Impressionism (...) than other German painters, especially in terms of handwriting and choice of colors. But even now he was reluctant to forego a supporting overall tone, against which, however, a precious sparkle of luminous colors can develop, evoking light and atmosphere, brilliance and cheerfulness. At the age of 51, he actually already had to be considered an artist with a completed oeuvre. Normally, one could have expected variations on what he had achieved, a probing of the border areas. That we see Rohlfs instead, at the beginning of the new century, seized by the spirit of that art revolution that had emanated from a generation 30-40 years younger, is a phenomenon."
