Signed lower left. - Sailing boats and harbor scenes are popular motifs of Signac - Created in spontaneous, fast working method on the spot - Colorful spots of color capture vibrant, Mediterranean light Signac has lived since 1892 with interruptions in the south of France and discovered as a passionate sailor the bay of Saint-Tropez, then still a small, insignificant fishing village. Many of his works are related to ship and water, the magical elements of his pictorial world. Here, skillfully placed, sweeping strokes of chalk capture the sailboat and the water's surface in the foreground, the city backdrop in the background, and the billowing clouds; brightly colored spots of paint capture the vibrant, Mediterranean light. The spontaneous, rapid method of working in watercolor is particularly suited to capturing the color and mood impressions of a moment, and at the same time is a counterbalance to Signac's minutely composed, pointillist oil paintings. Signac's watercolors are therefore more immediate and less doctrinaire than his paintings. With a photographic expertise by Marina Ferretti, Paris, dated 25.10.2022.
