Mask of agwe chaka type, Cross River region (Nigeria), Widekum. Large anthropomorphic helmet/face mask, wood, carved, fully covered with leather. H. 52 cm. The mask type is used in funeral ceremonies, the wearer impersonates a trickster or trickster, Schaedler compares with Eulenspiegel (Schaedler 1994). Additionally provided with a loose cape, the gives the image of a hunchback and symbolizes the idea of a child carried on someone's back. The child represents the deceased.
