burtu hunting mask, Nigeria, Hausa. Bird head skeleton, leather, wood, mirror discs, red seeds, balls / cloth balls in beak. Presentation foot. H. 41,5 cm (49 cm incl. foot). Hunting mask in the shape of a horned raven, is attached to the forehead of the wearer with a ribbon. The wearer makes bobbing movements with his head, the game is supposed to be lulled into safety by the feigned presence of the bird. Mainly used by the peoples of northern Nigeria.
