Large deformation mask of the ''idiok ekpu'' type, Nigeria, Ibibio. Expressive and highly stylized anthropomorphic mask with protruding tongue and originally four tusk-like protruding teeth. One tooth is missing. Attachment in the shape of a skull. Black patina, partially red and white pigments. Weathering or insect damage on the underside, inside and in the rim area. Raffia fibers as beard. Braid/weave of plant fiber strips on back. H. 50 cm. Provenance: Peer Hultberg Collection (1935-2007), Hamburg.
