Portrait of Empress Catherine the Great of Russia Breast piece of the ruler with tiara crown, ermine and blue ribbon. After Vigilius Eriksen (1722-1782). Oil on canvas, circa 1780. Unsigned. Label Sotheby's Copenhagen on the back. In decorative frame. 69 x 58 cm, 92 x 78 cm (Ra). Doubled, restored in 1996 in Denmark (note on stretcher). Numerous minor to medium retouchings in background and robe. As Royal Court Painter to Christian VI of Denmark, Eriksen traveled to St. Petersburg in the 1760s and quickly attracted attention for his talent. In the years that followed, he thus created numerous portraits of the tsarina and her family, which are now in the great collections of Europe. Portrait of Catherina the Great of Russia.
