Andalusian School, 17th century. "Infant Jesus and Saint John the Baptist". Carved and polychrome wood. Measurements: 52 x 24 x 9 cm. + 13 x 24 x 15 cm. (base). The Child Jesus is represented as the Saviour of the World, holding the orb in one hand and with two fingers extended in the other hand, a sign that symbolises his dual nature, human and divine. He is accompanied by Saint John the Baptist, both sharing the same infant anatomy, in which an attentive study of life is evident. They both adopt a dynamic position with the left knee slightly bent and the movement of the upper limbs. They follow baroque canons, with their characteristic search for naturalness and balanced dynamism. The gentle, plump faces are characterised by their expressiveness. The figures stand on carved and gilded wooden bases, in a clearly Baroque style, covered with edges on the sides.
