"Ligier Richier (1500-1567) (attributed to) : Very beautiful and rare mantel in Saint-Mihiel stone composed of a pediment and an entablature finely carved with arabesques; on the entablature, three medallions with, on the central one, the inscription: ""OU QUE DIEU LE VEULT"". The two jambs are formed by two columns decorated with acorns, flowers, horns and fruits, topped by two angels with mischievous looks. Ligier Richier is one of the greatest artists of the Renaissance in Lorraine. After a stay in Italy, in Rome to be precise, he worked from 1530 for the Duke Antoine de Lorraine. In the monograph entitled "Les Richier et leurs oeuvres", published in 1883 by Abbé Souhaut, he describes our fireplace: "From the artistically jagged pediment of the cornice stand out three medallions. In the middle one we read the exergue: "OU QVE DIEU VEVLT". Supporting this pediment, two angels, admirably executed, decorate the consoles that extend in the form of acorns perfectly imitated, and between which, horns carved with no less delicacy, pour from their abundance, flowers and fruits.
