LA FONTAINE, Jean de (1621-1695). Selected fables put into verse by Mr. de La Fontaine. In Paris, at Claude Barbin's, at the Palace on the Perron of the Sainte Chapelle. 1679. Fables choisies mises en vers par Mr. de La Fontaine. Tome second A Paris, chez Claude Barbin, au Palais sur le Perron de la Sainte Chapelle. 1682. 2 vol. in-12, contemporary speckled calf ; spine with 4 nerves decorated with small iron in the caissons. First volume : (36 ff), 155 pages. Second volume : (3 ff), 174 pages. The first volume, dated 1679, contains 124 Fables. It does not have a title on the title page. The running title of the 5th page of the Epistre à Monseigneur le Dauphin contains a typo: "Epistae" for "Epistre". This volume, with this collation, with the date of 1679, is missing from Rochambeau, Rochebilière and Tchemerzine. We find only one copy listed, in the Library of the University of Mannheim, but none in France. The second volume contains 88 Fables. It belongs to the edition of the Fables described by Rochambeau under n°17, in 3 volumes (1682, 1682 and 1694). Nice copy. We enclose, in a different and dull binding of the time, the "Fables choisies mises en vers par Mr de La Fontaine, tome premier", Claude Barbin, 1682, with the same collation as the 1679 volume. The typo in the running title of the Epistle is corrected, and the title reads "tome premier". The "Table des Fables" has become "Table des Fables contenues en cette Première partie". The wood "au panier fleuri" which appears on the title in 1679, is replaced on the title dated 1682 by a bouquet of tulips and artichokes; the wood "au panier fleuri" is placed at the end of La Vie d'Esope. (Rochambeau, for volumes dated 1682, n°17, page 10)
