FUNERARY SLAT Composed of a silver leaf worked in repoussé with an inscribed text. We find this type of lamella called "Orphic lamella", in the tombs of ancient Greece from the 5th century BC. These tablets, often made of gold, were intended to facilitate the way to Elysium. They are thin strips on which are inscribed guides to paradise, written from the point of view of the deceased. Dating from the 4th and 3rd centuries BC, they were most often found in tombs. About 30 to 40 of them have been found across the Greek-speaking Mediterranean, from the island of Crete to the mainland region of Thessaly in northern Greece and to "Magna Graecia", a coastal region in southern Italy settled by the ancient Greeks. Here the writing seems to be cursive ancient Greek, as used on papyrii of the second half of the 2nd century B.C. Dim. 45 x 50 mm Hellenistic art, 2nd century B.C.
