Nocturlabe combined with a portable vertical sundial in gilded brass
Probably late 16th century
Diam. 50 mm.
Obverse
A central disc bears on its circumference a scale of degrees reading at 2° in groups of thirty which corresponds with the signs of the zodiac named in Latin. A ring with twenty-four teeth numbered 1-12 x 2, rotates above this disc to be positioned in the zodiac by longer teeth positioned on the division of 0. An index marked 'Ligne de Foy' rotates above the two discs to be aligned with the guards of the North Star, the center of the instrument being pierced to aim it.
Reverse
Vertical sundial with folding gnomon engraved on the center disk on which a movable piece engraved with a lunar scale (1-29) rotates, with a second movable piece inside showing the phase of the moon by window and bearing an aspectarium. A support for a coat of arms (not engraved) is present, but the suspension for the device it is to carry is missing.
