Armand GUERY (1850-1912). The mill of Caurel (Marne) Starry night Signed canvas 50 X 65 cm Exhibition: Salon des Beaux Arts of 1891 under the n° 773 (old label on the back on the frame). Located on the booklet of the exhibition. Armand GUERY, born on March 4, 1853 in Reims and died on May 25, 1912 in Gueux. Born in Reims, he studied painting with the regionalist painter Auguste Maillet RIGON (1855-1884) who taught him the art of naturalist landscape. Faithful to his region, the artist enjoyed depicting typical trades, local customs, rural nature and the skies of the Champagne region. The village of Caurel is located east of Rheims in the Suippe valley: very calcareous, the region is not very suitable for cultivation, so in the 19th century the activity turned to sheep breeding and the wool economy. The mill represented on our painting was destroyed during the First World War. At the time of the Salon in reference, Guéry exhibited another painting (n° 772) which was acquired by the State and is currently kept at the Musée d'Orsay.
