*Bovai mace, Tonga Islands L. 72,5 cm Provenance : Private collection, Switzerland Beautiful club of oblong and cylindrical shape, progressively flaring on its upper end. The regular alternation of zigzag, linear and cruciform geometric motifs, finely and meticulously engraved on the surface, gives the object an ornamental character that has been the object of particular attention. Behind the apparent simplicity of the forms, the delicate decorative work is accentuated by the bright auburn patina. In the very hierarchical societies of the Tonga Islands, these motifs are social markers indicating the status and prestige of their owner.
