Co-founder of the Salon d'Automne in 1903 with Pierre Bonnard, Victor Charreton, a post-impressionist painter and outstanding colorist, is the figurehead of the Murol school in Auvergne. The vaporous treatment of his landscapes is perfectly reflected in this painting immortalizing a canal in the famous Venice of the North. Resolutely intimist, the artist offers us here, through a narrow shot, the whole atmosphere of Bruges at the beginning of the 20th century.
