Scottish painter born in Methil in Fife, he studied Fine Arts at the Edinburgh College of Art from 1932 to 1936 and then History of Art also in Edinburgh. Gear received a travel grant in 1937 which allowed him to come to Paris for two years where he studied under Fernand Léger.
