A rather comparable handwriting could be found in a signature on a currently lost portrait of an unknown man painted by Jacob van Oost I (1603-1671) in 1638 (cf. RKDimages 58555). In 1628 Van Oost returns from a journey to Italy. This might explain why he uses the Italian variant of his name. On the other hand, the following words do not seem to correspond to Van Oost signature on the portrait. Similarly, the is manner in which the artist is portrayed is rather unusual for Van Oost, who more commonly depicts his models in a more noble posture and majestic fashion. The 'Caravaggesque' handling of the light, on the other hand, does correspond to other paintings by his hand
