Samuel van den Hecken became master of the Guild of Saint Luke in Antwerp around 1616/17 and is known to have taken on a pupil in 1620. In 1629 he is mentioned in Leiden and seven years later in Amsterdam. Three paintings signed by him are listed: An Earthly Paradise in a private collection is close to Roelandt Savery and comparable to our panel (J. de Maere and M. Wabbes, Illustrated Dictionary of 17th Century Flemish Painters, Brussels 1994, vol. text p. 198 and vol. plate A-K, p. 551 and 552; catalog of the exhibition Le Siècle de Rubens, Brussels, Royal Museums of Fine Arts, 1965, p. 99, no. 103) The Allegory of the Four Elements in the Staatgalerie in Dessau and the Bouquet of Flowers (London, Art Trade) show him later influenced by Jan Brueghel de Velours.
