Empire armchair, Talleres Reales de Madrid, ca. 1810. Mahogany wood and gilded wood. Provenance: Infante Sebastián Gabriel. Provenance: private collection conceived since the 1970s between London and Madrid. Measurements: 106 x 64 x 50 cm. Empire armchair manufactured in the Royal Workshops of Madrid, important centres for the production of high quality furniture and other luxury objects for the Spanish court and for international trade. This is an armchair with a mahogany wood frame and gilded wood decorative details, finely carved and defined in the Empire style. Its aesthetic and period of production is in keeping with the Empire taste, which translates into clean volumes and a highly synthesised classical figuration that seeks to emulate elements of Egyptian and Greco-Roman inspiration. Although straight lines dominate, they are softened by the mouldings on the legs or the scrolls that decorate the armrests. In this case, the upholstery covering the seat and backrest, in a delicate cream shade and fine embroidered decoration, deserves special mention.
