The bed rests on four legs of rectangular structure with marquetry filleted in lemongrass. The whole exudes timeless solemnity, full of references to the classical world, but freely reinvented. This is a piece of furniture with late neoclassical roots.
The most aristocratic 19th century Russian furniture tends to emulate features of the Empire Style of Napoleonic France. This bed brings together the most characteristic elements of that desire to recreate imperial luxury and glory. On the one hand, the gondola typology, forming an ascending curve joining the headboard and footboard in a single line, is prototypical of the period.
