This child's portrait is based on the composition of the white marble bust attributed to one of the most famous sculptors of the French Renaissance, Germain Pilon, which is kept in the Louvre Museum. The identification of the child has given rise to several successive hypotheses, notably that of Henri IV as a child. Today specialists are more cautious in giving the model as anonymous. Nevertheless, the subject was very successful and different versions in bronze and gilded lead were executed from the 17th century onwards.
