LAFONTAINE CHARLES: (1803-1892) French mesmerist, or 'traveling public magnetic demonstrator' who had 'an interest in animal magnetism as an agent for curing or alleviating illnesses'. A.L.S., Lafontaine, one page, 8vo, Pall Mall East, London, 10th August 1841, to a gentleman, in French. Lafontaine states that he has received his correspondent's letter 'qui m'apprend, le desir, que vous avez de faire magnetiser votre fils sourd-muet il est agé de 8 ans ½' (Translation: 'which teaches me, the desire, which you have to have your deaf-mute son magnetized, he is 8 ½ years old') and continues to add that it is a favourable age and if he would like to come to Lafontaine's home tomorrow at 2 o'clock then 'j'examinerai s'il peut etre magnetise' (Translation: 'I will examine if he can be magnetised').
