Grotesque alphabet. Lith. Ch. Fernique. Rue de Clichy 15. Maison Thomas éditeur. Paris. [Circa 1850]. (12.3 x 11.2 cm). (22) lithographed plates in black, hand-colored with stencil and gummed and (1) plate printed in black, publisher's red chagrined paper slipcase, lithographed and colored title applied to one side, a grotesque face emerging from a sheet of paper. Rare humorous alphabet book in plates, lithographed, colored with stencil and enhanced with gum arabic. Of almost square format, a large composition occupies all the space of the card. At the bottom, in a band, the capital letter in black and the name of the illustration with its initial. U, V on the same card, as well as X, Y, Z. A last plate summarizes the alphabet. Caricatured portraits of couples and characters, sometimes close to the style of Daumier. Complete, in its original illustrated publisher's slipcase Edges of the slipcase rubbed, small angular lack on the plate of F, Smoker.
