BARBIER George (1882-1932), "Casanova".
Watercolor and India ink wash on paper pasted on cardboard. Costume study for the character of Casanova in black cape and holding a mask in his hand. Signed lower right. On the back, written in pencil: "Mr Flamand". One can also guess the almost erased annotation of "taffeta".
26,5x20cm
For the creation of the play in three acts and in verse by Maurice Rostand at the Bouffes-Parisiens theater on February 22, 1919. See on this subject the article of Edmond Jaloux: "A propos du Casanova de Maurice Rostand" in the review "La Renaissance de /'Art Français et des Industries de luxe". This study is reproduced in color with minor alterations in the book Casanova, décors et costumes by George Barbier (Editions Lucien Vogel, 1921). It is plate 7 at the beginning of act 2, entitled: "Entrée de Casanova".
Purchased at the Claude Aguttes sale on April 9, 1998 at the Hôtel des Ventes de Neuilly. The work is number 113 in the catalog. At the same sale was sold, outside the catalog, a stencil which was the reduced reproduction of our drawing.
