BERARD Christian, (1902-1949), "Juliette or the key of dreams". Gouache on grey paper. Study for one of the sets. Titled in the upper right corner: "Model n°2: the main square". Sight: 49x64cm This gouache, which represents the square of a small Mediterranean port, is a project executed in 1941 (according to Boris Kochno) for Marcel Carné's film which was not shot until 1950 and with another set designer. On the subject, see the article by Pierre Michaut: "Christian Bérard parle de la couleur" in the n°9 of "Cahiers du Cinéma" of February 1952: "Bérard sketched about half of the models, notably the place of the little port... Wakhévitch was about to realize his projects when the film was interrupted." Purchased at the Tajan sale on February 13, 1995 at the Hôtel Drouot. The work is numbered 108 in the catalog. Reproduced in black on page 21 to illustrate the article of "Cahiers du Cinéma" quoted above.
