When Sandrart recounts Rubens' visit to Honthorst's studio, he refers to the moment when the Antwerp master discovered our painting: "He [Rubens] also went to Utrecht to see von Honthorst, who received him. Honthorst showed him everything he had on hand, including a Diogenes with a lantern in his hand looking for [wise] men in the crowded Athens square in broad daylight. Rubens was very pleased with the invention, but immediately saw that it was by a young painter who had spent many long hours in the studio. He asked who had started this Diogenes and Honthorst answered: "that young German" and pointed to me. After having given a favorable judgment on this beginning, he encouraged me to continue my efforts and work and then went through the rest with real satisfaction." (J. von Sandrart, L'Academia Todesca della Architectura Scultura et Pictura: Oder Teutsche Academie der edlen bau-, bild-, und Mahlerey-Künste, Nuremberg, 1675, p. 157).
