Arranged on a marble table half covered by a yellow curtain are a globe, maps, a lute, books, a sculpture of a head, a jug, shells with corals and a sculpture of a cupid. In addition to Collier's trompe-l'œil still lifes, the artist's vanitas depictions enjoyed great popularity. With them, he demonstrated his ability to render a wide variety of surface textures painterly, in this case the shimmering mother-of-pearl of the nautilus shell, the pages of the book with dog ears or the polished wood of the lute. The compositions of this artist are characterized by an absolute simplicity and follow a geometric style with various objects, curtains and bright shades, mostly monochromatic, illuminated by a warm and fine light.19 x 15 cmOil on copper
