SCHOOL OF FERRARIUS, circa 1600, follower of GAROFALO
The Holy Family with Saint Anne and Saint John the Baptist
Canvas.
45,5 x 36,8 cm.
(Old restorations).
Reprise of the composition of Garofalo kept in the Louvre.
This beautiful painting is an early copy, of comparable size, of an oil on panel by Garofalo, which entered the collection of Louis XIV in 1662 and is now in the Louvre. Our composition, which is wider than the one in the Louvre, extends further to the right than the latter and shows a continuation of the landscape after the column. As the Louvre painting was modified in the 17th century, perhaps cut and bent at the top before being returned to the rectangle, it is possible that our version reflects an original state of Garofalo's work.
