ANDRÉ BRETON (1896-1966) LETTRE AUTOGRAPHE SIGNÉE à René MAGRITTE. Huelgoat,... ANDRÉ BRETON (1896-1966) AUTOGRAPHIC LETTER SIGNED to René MAGRITTE. Huelgoat, August 14, 1946, 3 1/2 pages in-8 in ink on mouse grey paper. Famous and fierce letter sealing the rupture between Breton and Magritte, the latter displaying a little too much for Breton's taste his admiration for Chirico. ...'I don't know if my letter was conventional but yours is of a bitterness... sweeter than to children. Why do you attack with this frenzy your friends of yesterday, under the pretext that the grace that you claim to spread has not touched them even more than me?... you will end up convincing me that the sun is not in you. And how could it be there since you feel the need to go and look for it at Renoir's? You go to look for it there but it doesn't follow you... I will make you remember what happened to Chirico, from the moment when, for reasons that are perhaps as valid as yours, he deliberately left his nocturnal - or dreamlike, as you will... One day he thought he was going out into the open air. Finally we breathed. And I camp you two horses piaffe of ease. Believe well my dear Magritte that I do not nourish against the horses any particular hatred... Here they are well the ghosts the pastiche horses, this sun which cannot but!...' ...'The sun does not necessarily make people happy. So make a stay in Haiti occasionally'. This exceptional letter was published in André Breton, 5 letters, in-8 booklet that is attached. AUTOGRAPH LETTER to René MAGRITTE, SIGNED. Huelgoat, 14 August 1946, 4pp, ink on grey paper, 8vo.
