PAUL ELUARD (1895-1952)
AUTOGRAPH POEM IN 10 STANZAS ABOUT PARIS. [1945]. 1 page in-4. Corrections and erasures in ink and pencil.
This poem about the occupation in Paris, entitled Pour l'Amour de la Vie, published in Les lettres Françaises on April 28, 1945. It presents numerous variants with the printed text.
I see Paris as it was
Yesterday barely shaded
Paris empty and desperate
Paris as a punctured painting...
The city was occupied
By infamous sovereigns
And those who revolted
And those who were slaughtered
Were the only ones to save
This city with a sensitive heart
This absurd poetry
Which will dissolve the misfortune...
We all and for all times
The spring keeps us upright
They shiver on the ruins
It plays with our children.
