FESTBÜCHER - Carnival - [The great public masquerade on horseback and chariots in Bamberg on Shrove Monday 1837]. Album with 25 (of 28) col. Copper plates. Bamberg, J. B. Lachmüller, [1837]. Oblong folio. Marbled paperback (spine missing, front cover loose). In modern linen case with cover title. The title page as well as plates 6, 7 and 10 are missing. Additionally bound in are 7 colored plates with "Krähwinkler" and other figures probably from the pageant of 1833 - cf. Lipperheide Sn 27 - Rare carnival procession with equally critical-oppositional tendencies of the Vormärz as anti-Semitic images. The procession is led by the carnival jester, followed by the maiden regiment on horseback, the carriage of the chief corpse surgeon Dr. Flitenhauer, the doctor Lux with his corpse monkey and the pharmacist Stösel with the field pharmacy, a tartar procession and a carriage with "eppes Schacherjuden". - Somewhat browned and dust- and fingerstained. The additional plates mostly smaller in size. This object marked with * (asterisk) is fully subject to VAT, i.e. for these objects VAT will be charged on the hammer price plus buyer's premium.
